Apokries is celebrated before fasting starts for Easter. Each year, many traditions for Apokria are being revived. The Apokria season lasts for 3 weeks during which time everyone really enjoy themselves by dressing up, organising parties and eating lots of meat!.

Annual General Meeting.

We will be holding the 2023 annual general meeting on Sunday the 18th of February, 2pm at the South Melbourne Hellenic RSL 14A Ferrars Pl, South Melbourne.

All Committee positions are declared vacant at the AGM and financial members are eligible to nominate for a position. Nomination forms can be downloaded from our website or are available from our secretary and should be submitted to P.O.Box 34 Essendon North 3041 no later than the 11th of February 2024 Light refreshments will be served. All members are welcome to come along.

Every year on the 11th of November we celebrate the integration of Samos into Greece which took place in 1912. While Samos was one of the first parts of Greece to enter the struggle for freedom during the years of the revolution and expelled the oppressor from its lands , the Great Powers stipulated that Samos must remain a vassal of the Ottoman Empire. Therefore, from 1834 to 1912 Samos was a principality with a Christian ruler under the suzerainty of the Sultan. The unruly and freedom-loving Samians, however, could not accept their servitude to the Sultan. Led by friend of Eleftherios Venizelos and later Prime Minister of Greece Themistocles Sofoulis, they rebelled and declared the union of the island with Greece on November 11, 1912. Greek forces arrived on the island on March 2, 1913 and since then Samos has blossomed as part of the motherland. On Sunday the 13th of November a eulogy will be held in the holy church of Agios Dimitrios 1 Gladstone Street Moonee Ponds. Followed by a celebration opposite at the church hall. Bookings are essential before the 10th of November.

ΕΝΣΩΜΑΤΩΣΗ ΤΗΣ ΣΑΜΟΥ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ

Αγαπητοί μας συμπατριώτες, στις 11 Νοεμβρίου γιορτάζουμε την ενσωμάτωση της Σάμου στην Ελλάδα που έγινε το 1912. Δυστυχώς, ενώ η Σάμος ήταν από τα πρώτα μέρη της Ελλάδος που μπήκαν στον αγώνα για την λευτεριά τα χρόνια της επανάστασης και έδιωξε τον δυνάστη από τα εδάφη της, οι Μεγάλεις Δυνάμεις όρισαν όπως η Σάμος παραμένει υποτελής στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία. Συνεπώς από το 1834 έως το 1912 υπήρχε στη Σάμο ηγεμονικό καθεστώς με Χριστιανό ηγεμόνα. Οι ανυπόταχτοι και φιλελεύθεροι Σάμιοι όμως δεν μπορούσαν να αποδεχθούν την υποτέλεια τους στο Σουλτάνο. Με επικεφαλής τον φίλο του Ελευθερίου Βενιζέλου και μετέπειτα πρωθυπουργό της Ελλάδος Θεμιστοκλή Σοφούλη, επαναστάτησαν και κήρυξαν την ένωση του νησιού με την Ελλάδα την 11η Νοεμβρίου 1912. Οι ελληνικές δυνάμεις έφτασαν στο νησί στις 2 Μαρτίου 1913 και έκτοτε η Σάμος χαίρει την εθνική της αποκατάσταση.

Την Κυριακή 13 Νοεμβρίου θα τελεστεί δοξολογία στον ιερό ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου Moonee Ponds, 1 Gladstone Street, Moonee Ponds, και θα ακολουθήσει μεσημεριανό γεύμα στην αίθουσα εκδηλώσεων της ενορίας, απένταντι από την εκκλησία, με πλούσια φαγητά, ποτά, αναψυκτικά και ζωντανη μουσικη.
